What makes a successful character animation?
France is today the third largest animation producer in the world and the European leader in the field*.
French artists and studios create and develop full-length feature films, TV series, commercials, short art-house films, special effects, video games and other emerging forms of audiovisual expression. In addition to the diversity of graphic and animation styles, narrative modes and characters, these creators share a French touch that is recognised and appreciated around the world. Such creativity in Animation has been the trademark of GOBELINS for 40 years.
Building on the strength of its expertise and worldwide reputation, GOBELINS has adapted the content of its 2D Animation International Summer School to create this online programme. It is aimed at enabling students and professionals from around the world to gain a better understanding of what makes a successful character animation.

The programme has been designed for professionals and advanced students in Animation and is based on 3 pillars:
- Experience: GOBELINS’ finest applied research in Character Animation is presented by GOBELINS professors during lectures.
- Expertise: chosen experts from the industry share their practical experience directly with the students during lectures and workshops.
- Practice: tailor-made exercises assigned to the students by the lecturers in the workshops and reinforced thanks to individual coaching.
Following the morning lectures, workshops will be held each afternoon. Over the two weeks, participants will be given one exercise to complete with the guidance of our professional tutors.
Participants will work on a 4-to-6-second acting exercise focused on a character’s change of mood and expressions or for the more advanced, an interaction between two characters.
At the end of the course, participants will receive an official certificate from GOBELINS.
*GOBELINS reserves the right to alter the day to day programme whenever it needs to be amended or improved.
Classes will be held on GOBELINS’ online platform from 12.00 P.M. to 8.30 P.M. (Paris time) from 29th November to 10th December 2021.
Some classes or activities may begin earlier and finish later.
