Summer School in Character Animation

Summer School, 4 to 15 July 2022

Target audience

Students or young professionals

Minimum age: participants must be over 18 y.o for the full package
Requirements for those who would like to participate in the workshops (Full Package and Package 2):
=> Background in Animation or Visual Arts
=> Good drawing skills
=> Proficiency in Animation softwares, such as TV paint for 2D Animation, or Maya for 3D Animation/ Except for traditional animators.
=> If admitted to the course, you’ll be required to bring your own tablet with a stylus (ex: Wacom, Huion…). Please complete this information in the application form.
Other profiles (production management…) who would like to get a better understanding of Character Animation can attend the morning lectures (no participation in the afternoon workshops) and may register as auditor.
The programme is 100% in English, therefore applicants should have a good command of the language in order to follow the course.

ADMISSION

Send your application form, with a short CV, together with a portfolio showing examples of your graphic and Animation work to summerschool@gobelins.fr or via WeTransfer. Website links are also accepted.
Please note that seats in the programme are limited, hence the selection committee will examine the files for admission on a first come first served basis, until places remain available.
After notification of admissibility, you will be able to proceed to the payment using our online platform.
Seat will only be guaranteed after complete payment.
GOBELINS will not return any submitted material.

Cancellation policy:
Should the Summer School be cancelled due to an unexpected outbreak, GOBELINS will refund the tuition fees in full.
In the event of a cancellation by the participant:

before April 1st 2022, all participation fees will be reimbursed
after April 1st 2022, GOBELINS, l’école de l’image will retain 50% of paid fees
after June1st 2022, the school reserves the right to retain the full payment

Presentation

This immersive 2 week Summer School gives you the opportunity to expand your skills in many aspects of Animation and to get a better understanding of what makes a successful Character Animation.
The morning classes will present you with different aspects of the Animation pipeline and will be followed by workshops where – depending on your goals - you will be able to create a unique Animation sequence in 2D, or a body mechanic shot in 3D under tutors’ guidance.

Morning Lectures:

Listen to masterclasses where GOBELINS professors will bring their award-winning teaching experience to the audience
Attend lectures given by internationally renowned experts from the industry sharing their professionalism
Discover GOBELINS methods on advanced techniques in Animation
Learn best tips to develop your portfolio

Afternoon workshops :

Benefit from state of the art digital facilities (one computer per student with Adobe suite, TVpaint, Maya installed on all computers) and art supplies for hand-drawn Animation.
Complete an Acting exercise focused on a character’s expression and gesture - or an interaction between two characters for more advanced participants.
Focus on a walk cycle or a body mechanic exercise to produce a 3-5 second sequence in 3D
Receive invaluable individual feedback from your tutors
Experience outdoor sketching in a Parisian setting if fancy
Participate in the « Acting for Animation » class

Classes are 100% taught in English.
On final day, the participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work in front of a jury.
All participants will receive an official certificate from GOBELINS at the end of the Summer School.

From July Monday 4th to July Friday 15th 2022

Summer School classes will be held from 10 AM to 5 PM - Monday to Friday
The school welcomes international students from 8:30 AM until 6 PM - Monday to Saturday.
Classrooms will also be available for personal work.
Premises are closed on Sunday hence no activities will be scheduled on Sunday 10th
Please note that some classes or activities may begin earlier or finish later. The school reserves the right to make any last-minute change in the programme whenever it needs to be amended or improved.

TUITION FEES

Full package: 3200 Euros

Complete attendance to morning lectures and afternoon workshops
A welcome breakfast and a welcome dinner in a typical French restaurant (on 12/07)
Accommodation*
Travel pass for local transport**

*Accommodation: 13 nights from July 3rd to July 15th. Typically a room in one of the residences of the International University Campus in Paris.
Check-in: Sunday July 3rd /Check-out: Saturday July 16th morning
**Upon arrival on Sunday 3rd, participants will be given a Travel Pass to enjoy unlimited travel on Metro, bus, or RER within central Paris valid until July 16th. The pass is suitable to commute between residence and school

Package 2: 2600 Euros without Accommodation, no Travel pass Including:

Complete attendance to morning lectures and afternoon workshops
A welcome breakfast and a welcome dinner in a typical French restaurant (12/07)

Auditor Package: 1800 Euros without afternoon workshops, no Accommodation, no Travel pass

As safety of students and staff is our priority, GOBELINS will comply with the government guidelines ensuring you are in the best possible condition during the Summer School (hand sanitizing station, face covering inside the school if mandatory, reduced capacity to keep social distances …)
