Presentation

Capture the essence of the pose to tell your story!

Whether youʼre interested in working as a character designer, storyboard artist, animator, or illustrator for animation, comics or childrenʼs books; all require strong drawing skills to tell your story. Gesture drawing is the most important part of those skills to effectively communicate your ideas to an audience. The program will look at how to capture the essence of the pose for character design, storyboarding, animation and illustration. Each day we will explore different graphic principles including lines of action, rhythm and exaggeration, shapes and the flexibility of the pose to create expressive drawings.

Building on 40 years of experience teaching animated storytelling, GOBELINS is organising a new International Summer School to enable students and professionals from around the world to better understand the importance of gesture drawing for animation.

Programme

The program is designed for anyone interested in capturing movement in drawing and improving their gesture drawing skills.

Niall Laverty is an animator, illustrator and has a passion for gesture drawing. He will give lectures, demos and critiques that guide participants through topics including:

• Lines of Action - Understanding the rhythm of the pose

• Straights & Curves - Designing the drawing

• Squash & Stretch - Flexibility in the drawing

• Exaggeration - Pushing the pose

• Silhouette - Shapes of action
