The campaign starts now! All GOBELINS is behind the young filmmaker for the next step: the academy’s « short list », with the 10 short films that will be able to pursue in the competition.
The film "THE OSTRICH POLITIC" caught the attention of Guillermo del Toro who was the patron of the 2018 class of the GOBELINS Master of Arts in Animation. "THE OSTRICH POLITIC" is now in competition with short films from all over the world and against the biggest animation studios.
Do you know how ostriches bury their heads when in fear?
Inspired by this myth, HouHou created a satirical short film that reflects our tendency to privilege typical misconceptions over facts in order to preserve an illusion of well-being. With a humoristic and absurd delivery, he addresses several societal and political issues such as freedom of conscience, false knowledge and scientific truth, using the metaphor of the Ostrich. In an era of information overload, where fake news is invading social platforms, HouHou reminds us that our worlds remain fragile…
An incredible storytelling
The pitch: Ostriches carry on their daily activities burying their heads, believing It’s an Instinctive behavior. However, one day a research by phylogeneticist Dr. Kays proves otherwise…
Saluted for his incredible storytelling, its original writing from a poem by the author himself, the Ostrich Politic challenges us. « From a creative point of view, writing the script was very difficult. I worked a lot to find a balance between narration and images », says HouHou. « Upon writing the script, poetry began to just flow. Afterwards I felt it pushed the overall absurd humor in the film. An Ostrich, who is a Scientist, delivering a Poem! This helped me introduce symbolic representations ».
The Ostrich character: a creative and technical challenge
The Ostrich Politic is a 3D Animated short film created using several computer graphic softwares. The director faced several challenges regarding the production of this piece, much of which are creative and others which are technical. On a technical note, creating the visuals was very challenging! I wanted to push the character towards a realistic style to enhance the absurdity of having an Ostrich living in a Human environment. Fur and Feathers are considered as some of the most complicated pieces to create in 3D. They're heavy on the software and they take lots of time to render.
A similar case is the wing, I researched a lot on how it functions, how it spreads and how it folds. Another challenge was creating the crowds in the film since I have several shots with hundreds of ostriches protesting or celebrating.
