PHOSPHORUS - Graduation short film 2021

The Pitch
Basking in a theatres lights, a realm of dust particles dances in unison. One sprite suddenly gets the chance to be centre stage…
The Film
What are your visual inspirations ?
We were very inspired by the careful designs of Art Nouveau of the Belle Epoque, classic Golden Age films that used early Technicolour, the variety of colors and designs found in microscopic sea life… we had a myriad of places to draw inspiration from.
How did you come up with the story and the visuals ?
I think the most important moment for us was going to see the making-of film of Les Indes Galantes at Bastille Opera. It was there that the idea for a dance-centric film first emerged. After that, the British film The Red Shoes became a reference for us in terms of style and visual language.
Did each person take care of one sequence ?
Yes, although we had plenty of help on each of our parts for cleanup and colour. We also had Craig Grieve model the theatre in 3D after our original designs.
How did you come up with the music ?
We took both Ravel and Shostakovich as our musical references, especially “La Valse” and “Piano Trio no.2”. respectively.
How did you manage the artistic choices as a team ?
I think that we were all on the same page about using light as the central element, so that made the design process quite streamlined, since it is such a universal theme. After that, we always worked iteratively, trying to build upon and improve on what was already there.
