The Undefeated, when animation gets mobilized for child protection!
An engaging and touching series
The Undefeated is an original series of 15 animated shorts created by the Franco-Indian NGO TARA, the film director Dorothée Adam, and the students of GOBELINS, the School of Images.
The movies are inspired by true stories and events experienced by the children of TARA in South Delhi. They aim to raise public awareness of the value of education and child protection in India.
Each film takes the form of a first-person account. Different characters take the floor to tell us something about themselves, be it a significant event or just a sneak peek into their life. They give us a glimpse of not only their personalities but also their joys, doubts, and hopes.
The power of animation
During the discussions between TARA and Dorothée Adam, the use of animation became an obvious choice to thell these stories. With its freshness and poetry, drawing was the ideal way to illustrate the children’s point of view, colored by their inner lives and their imaginary worlds. Animation also made it possible to broach sensitive topics with care, thanks to metaphor and graphic suggestions.
Following this line of thought, the team reached out to GOBELINS, the prestigious animation school of Paris, which was glad to adapt these stories to the screen. During nearly 4 months, 30 students of the Motion Design department took up the project, regularly exchanged with the author of the scenarios, the field teams in India, and the children themselves. Their sensitivity led them to different approaches and techniques (traditional animation, 3D, stop motion, paper cut-outs, synaesthesia etc.) that create the richness and diversity of the results..
